Ok, I have two manuals and they are just too general covering a wide range of motors. I need some specifics for my motor. I had a lean sneeze that got taken care of through a carb tuneup..cha ching $160 at a boat repair place. This is all they did though. The motor still runs too rough for my liking at lower RPM's, I put new plugs in it as well. Now I'd like to check the points which I would have thought the shop would have done for $160 but I guess not.

What I need to know is the proper procedure to pull the flyweel. After pulling the pull starter off there is a shaft which is not threaded and the flywheel does not have threaded puller holes. There is what looks to be a 7/8 nut but in closer examintion it looks like it is part of the shaft... I could be wrong here but I do not see any threads where that nut meets the shaft. It would seem though that this is the nut that must be loosened and removed before the flywheel can be pried up. I need that advice here as I refuse to take it back to the shop for yet more expenses. Here are some pictures of the Flywheel and the nut in question on the shaft.

Flywheel Force 15 Photos

Also does anyone know where I can get a flywheel strap wrench for this applicaiton? Local auto parts stores don't carry these specialty tools.

Thanks,
Karvin

Im sure that is your nut. They have apparently machined a shaft at the top of it.I have an old Johnson that has a flywheel nut that pulls the flywheel as you unscrew it.
Try NAPA for a strap wrench. Ive had good luck
giving the wrench a whack with a hammer to pop the nut loose.Usually only takes a couple of hits.
Is there a low speed mix adjust on your carb?
Probably not but it wouldnt hurt to take a look.
Good luck.

A strap wrench is a hard thing to come by it seems. I tried Napa, Kragen, Pep Boys, Sears and two other local parts tools stores and even the lawnmower shop.. Only Sears says they have it probably but they were out. I asked at the counter at Napa and the only thing close in their catalog was a flywheel turner wrench but I was afraid it would be too big and I would have to order it. So a frustrating search locally unless Sears gets it back into stock.

i always use a rope tourniquet with a screwdriver to twist it tight and then hold the flywheel steady, never fails.

Well it turns out after I came home and did some onlinet Internet searching for strap wrenches that I saw somebody using a rubber one to strap around the flywheel... So back to sears I want and bout theirs. It was barely large enough just buy 1/2 an inch. After gripping it with this and whacking on the nut it came loose and the top part of the shaft wasThen I spent 30 minutes and penetrating oil later I was able to pry it off. The 6 inch puller I bought was a little too narrow unfortunately.

In looking at the points they were a bit pitted and to closed so I adjusted those back .020. The condensor, prim & secondary coil readings were a bit off the spes so I'll tackle those later. I Putting back everything the motor ran just a hair better.

I did note that the tune-up the shop gave it had the idle screw set to two full turns when the manual say one. One will make it lean sneeze so I settled for 1 1/2 turns as that seemed to smooth it out a bit.

Now I need to find out if the points and condensor can be ordered.... Anyone know if these are pretty common components you can still get?
