Pulling to the right

I have a '87, 19 foot Capri Bowrider that I just bought. It pulls to the right at mid to full throttle. I adjusted the trim tab all the way over to try and compensate for the pull but it still does it. It can be so bad that if you take your hand off the wheel, the boat will jerk hard.

Question I have is will the Smart Tabs correct this or is there something that I'm missing here.

Also, what the heck is that little know under the steering wheel for. I've loosened it up and it makes no difference as to when it's tightened up.

Well, I see that little trick didn't work. Take your tab and replace it to the middle position. Run it and make small adjustments.
Smart tabs will not correct for your situation. They are primarily used for bow up and down situations.
That little know ( knob ) is to tighten your helm up. If you have turned both in and out and still feel no resistance then it's shot. It is mainly a screw pin that pushes against the helm arm. Could be that after all this time that a groove has been worn into the shaft itself causing it to be useless. Could go with a longer pin ( screw) but don't have the slightest idea on where to look for one. Maybe call the manufacturer and throw that question to them.
What type of steering system do you have?

Re: Pulling to the right

I put the trim tab in the middle and it seems worse. I then moved it a little each way and it didn't seem to make a difference. As far as the steering, I know it's a rack and pinion set up, that's about it.

For that knob below the steering wheel, I never realy messed with it, I thought it was to move the wheel in and out, knid of like tilt steering.

If it isn't the trim tab, what else could it be? The weight is centered in the boat. Even if I add more people to the left side it does it. Is it possible that the prop is the wrong one?

Re: Pulling to the right

... hi brian,

i had the same pull. i managed to control mine by making the adjustments to my snouts fin. in this pic it was way off. once i re-seated my foil and swiveled my snout over, the pull was helped a lot. assuming you have an O/B.

Yep, I have an outboard. I also have a hydrofoil sitting in the garage that has never been mounted. I was thinking of mounting it but others say it is just a bandaid for the problems with plaining. I'll look to see if I can find the thing as it's 8 or 9 years old now and install it anyway.

We'll go from there.
