I have a 1991 40hp evenrude. I have been reading about the pulse limiter and suggestions are that if the one on my motor is black I should change it to the blue one. Any comments? also where is the pulse limiter located? And do I need to change this out? I am having no problems that I am aware of. I Know I need to get a Manual. Which one is best in ya'lls HO??

Thanks in advance.

Tom H

Re: Pulse limiter

The best manuals are the factory manuals. Mine came from marineengine.com but there are other suppliers of reprints if you wanna price shop.

Re: Pulse limiter

If you are not having problems, then I wouldnt change it just yet.

Is the VRO original? if it is, then change the VRO and the pulse limiter at the same time. The new "OMS" pumps are infinitely more reliable.

If the VRO has been replaced, then I would go ahead and change it. Then take the old pulse limiter back to the shop that changed the VRO and find out if anyone there can identify what it is, and where it goes... If they can't... SHOW THEM!

PS...(The first draft of this statement was voluntarily reprinted for family viewing.)

Re: Pulse limiter

Tom

Is you VRO working or has it been disconnected? I have an 89 50 and the VRO was disconnected. I recently bought the upgrade kit for the VRO that has all the parts. Below is a link to an article that will give you all the part numbers you want. If you want to put in a new VRO it's around $275 and comes with the limiter. Not sure about the cost of the limiter but the part number for the new one is in the article. This was posted by someone else (can't remember but thanks) a few weeks ago & I found it very informative.

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

For those interested:

www.continuouswave.com is a site for Boston Whaler fanatics. They are a very organized group. It's unlikey that they haven't covered a topic that has been discussed here.

Also:
The new OMS pump part for your engine is # 5004562
You should be able to find it for around $250
It comes with the Pulse limiter and all manner of fittings and wires to install it properly.

Re: Pulse limiter

The VRO is working fine no problems, appears to be the orig. I have had the boat for a year and have had it on the water 12 times and runs great. Just curious as to where the limiter is located,is it easy to get to? do you have to remove the VRO ect. ect. The reason I asked the question was due to the article mention above by Dave F I had read this several weeks ago and it mentioned to change the limiter if it was not the blue one. Like they say if it ain't broke don't fix it might apply in this case.I just want to keep things working and on the water.
Thanks to all for the replys.

Tom H.

Re: Pulse limiter

The limiter should be on the bottom of the block just behind where the VRO is. You can follow a larger diameter hose from the VRO to the block. On my 50, it's easy to see.

Re: Pulse limiter

The pulse limiter goes between the air motor on the VRO, and the pulse, or air nipple on the block. It's purpose is to protect the diaphram in the air motor from a lean condition back-fire. On the V engines, it screws into the block.

Re: Pulse limiter

Rabidfish or R. Johnson
I still cannot find the pulse limiter do I need to remove the starter to locate this unit? This is a Evenrude 1991 40hp with VRO everthing is real tight and close I have a manual it indicates that this will be a inline unit, the hose comes out of the bottom of the VRO and is impossible to see where it goes. Any help will be appreciated, Its worhing fine just need to know where in case also I have read that it needs to be the blue unit just trying to keep everything in good order.
Thanks

Tom H

Re: Pulse limiter

Yes, remove the starter. You will probably have to remove the VRO unit also. The "pulse limiter" is the hose nipple that attaches the pulse hose to the engine block.
