i have a evinrude / johnson outboard shop manual not so sure if the wire diagram is matcheing my motor looking at other diagrams to find one that maybe matches .ya i heard the same thing about switching over to a manul shift to .have to do some homework for sure like to get this motor to fire up ,had it running last summer .wondering if you can switch lower unit to a newer model unit. first thing first must have spark.

have you done a voltage test on your wires to make sure that the purple wires show voltage when the ignition key is tested?

purpel wire is good goiing in pulse pack .i asume the green wire should be hot going to coil but it is cold is that a bad pulse pack.

you have to use a dva meter to test the output.

i used a test light for purpel wire and the green wire .purpel lights up and the green is dead i asume that is why i have no spark.

I believe i have a pulse pack that will work for that motor. I have two extra's due to previous owner not diagnosing ignition problem correctly. I'll check to see if it does work if you are interested.

thought i would update you on motor,I found a motor on craigs list for 150 bucks same motor same year and model ,top end is probley no good guy ran motor with straight gas no mix ,i found a part that was missing on mine put on and now i have spark .anyway i need his bottom for the electric shift .any hints on does and donts on changeing bottom half like the wires,and the water tubes,hey thaks for all the help.

when you are going to drop your lower unit, unhook your shift wires and wrap them with electrical tape. Stretch your tape out about 3 feet and then do a hockey twist. when you drop the unit and pull your shift wires out make sure you don't pull the tape through the hole. Once you drop the unit and can unhook the tape from the wires you will now have a line that you can retape the new wires to and pull them up through the hole. be sure to soap the cable so its easier to pull the cable up through the hole. there are two plastic tube guides that need to be put in the water pump housing before you push up the unit the last few inches. If you dont see them they might be attached to the water tubes. just pull them down. once you are going to push up the lower unit , make sure the motor is down for easy install. that's about all I can say.

I changed mine by myself slipping in the mud on a cold day mine was a 1972-85 hp same thing. Anyway, they can be tricky. First thing. tie a sturdy piece of fishing line to the wire before you drop it, so you can pull the wire back through the hole. I changed the impeller, which is easy. Then I got me a heavy duty bungy cord and used it to hold the lower end on while I lined up the water tubes, they can be tricky so be careful. Tie the bungy cord to the lower end and the motor allowing space to get your fingers in there and line up the plastic guide tubes to the water pump housing. Look up my name I wrote a couple of post on how I did it.
