That is strictly a local Motor Vehicle question. Every state has different policies.

theres got to be someone out there from georgia that bought a boat with cash. somewhere in the price range of 2000 to 6000 dollars. what happened when you went to get tag?

call the tag agency in County, and DNR about the boat registration. Florida laws have just changed, and prices sky rocketed. you will need a bill of sale.

In the great state of NJ you certainly have to pay taxes on your purchase when you register.

the purchase price on this was 5k, but they wrote me out 2 bill of sales. one for trailer and one for boat. i think i can get away with just a tag transfer. not sure. the trailer bill of sale has no amount listed

you will need to do an owners transfer for the boat with the DNR to get it registered i think it was under 30 bucks,my tag for the traler wasn't but like 10 bucks you may be able to do a transfer on the other just go to tag office they will be able to tell you.you can do all the dnr stuff on line they are gona want a legal bill of sale that you can get from tag office, a copy of ur id, and a copy of the previous boat owners registration certificate.

I'm in the great state of Georgia too (owned and operated by the DNR). If you buy a boat used from an individual you are not required to pay sales tax. If you purchase one from a dealer (even if it is used) you have to pay sales tax. The trailer will have a flat rate for a new tag (not sure what it is though not more than $30 though). Did the trailer have a title? If yes it's easy. You will have to submit a MV-1 (for a new title) and DOR Tag/Title application (to swap the tag) at your local tag office. If not you will have to go through the run around that I'm about to embark on. If the trailer is homemade and doesn't have a title (like mine) you have to do the MV-1, a T-23, and a T-22 once you have your T-serial plate. The boat will require you to have a title, bill of sale, and previous registration to get it registered and a new title. I hate the way Georgia operates this system.

Re: purchacing a tag question

In Georgia there is no sales tax on transactions between individuals. I purchased a new boat in Fl last year and had to pay the sales tax in GA. They didn't collect it in FL but GA had their hand out come this spring. You should only be responsible for the tag transfer fees and will not have to pay and personal property taxes until 2011. As far as paper work needed. GA only requires titles on trailers weighting over 2000LBs. A simple bill of sale will do quite fine as long as the serial numbers. If you are in one of the rural counties the local tag office in the county seat is usually very easy to deal with.

Hope you have fun this summer. What lakes are you planning on hitting?

In Kansas, you pay the personal property taxes, registration, and tag fees within 30 days of purchase.
