i have been told the engine(j1300vxsss)has approx
50 hrs. on it and that the compression is 95 on each of the cyclinders. does this sound right? what would be an appropriate range or number for the compression. i am concerned as someone brand new to boating.

95 psi is a bit on the low side. It's good that they are all consistant.

Do you know if the throttle plates were open when the comp. check was done?

I would try another gauge if posible. I have a 1996 130 and the compression is 145 to 150 with the boat dealers gauge, 135 to 140 with my gauge. Your gauge may be leaking. It does sound a little low compared to what I have seen posted here. This perticular V-4 (130 hp) tends to test higher than most V-4s from what I have gathered. There is a post near the top in the john rude forum titled 1995 130 that has his compression posted and it is about the same as mine.
