I would like to stay around $200, for a smaller saw, but good name. Stihl and Huskvarna (SP?) both have saws in the $200 range. Also, I saw a Cub Cadet 20" professional saw for $200 that looked pretty nice. I'm not sure that Cub Cadet are the saw experts tho'. Most everyone I know that does a lot of sawing has Stihl. Thanks in advance for any comments. Jeff

IMHO you can't go wrong with either a Husky or a Stihl. I think that they are made by the same company but I'm not sure.

We live with chain saws and they are a very valuable tool. My choice is a Sthil hands down.

I have had several pull-ons (poulon) and would not reccomend them if you will use it much. I had a real nice Stihl but someone wanted it more than me. I now have a Husky 455 rancher. Its a bad aspirin bottle for sure. It does have more maintance than the Stihl but I love it, its tough and just keeps on going. Either brand is a good choice.

Just a year ago I bought a sthil (i think its a mini boss) and it is a great little saw for around the house trimming and small scale wood cutting. The thing I like best about it is that you can adjust the chain without any tools.

Go with a Stihl!

Seriously, both saws are great in reliability, but Stihl seems a bit easier to operate to me. The choke, kill switch, and decompression (on some) are just easier to manipulate on a Stihl than Husky. Also, Stihls smaller saws have the "no tools" chain adjustment.

I have 2 025 Stihls, one is about 7 years old and has been left out in the rain, fell off the four wheeler multiple times, fell off my truck once, and used pretty roughly. It's on the 3rd bar, and about the 5th or 6th chain, and it starts and runs perfectly. You just can't kill 'em!

Re: Purchasing good new Chainsaw Suggestions?

Thank you everyone for your great comments. I went to get the Husky and I took another look at the Cub Cadet 20" professional. It looked pretty nice and the price had come down #50. So I bought the Cub. The tag says Huskvarna and I asked the gal at the store and she thinks theyre' made by them. Anyway, I gave it a workout all day Saturday and I am very happy so far. Starts right away and eats wood like crazy. Longevity is yet to be seen, but so far looks like a really nice saw. Jeff

My company's forestry people all use Stihls and say they are the best. As for Poulans, they're OK for light use but not heavy duty.

I like my TimberBear by McC whatever it is. Old and heavy but it works.

I was lookiong for a new saw and the two choices I see no are Husky and Stihl. Stihl is just a bit to high in price for me.

If my bear ever dies then I will be gettin a Husky.

Well- this would've been my reccomendation. The Tanaka ECV-4501 has several good features.

Re: Purchasing good new Chainsaw Suggestions?

Every company, incl Stihl, produces a "promotional" model for cheap price. It has sleeve crank bearings and such. They are ok for occasional use, but won't last a long time.

If you want to use it for a long time, pay the price for a good saw with ball bearing construction. I have a Stihl 032 that I've had for ages, used a lot, and is still a great saw. Husky and Jonseruds are comparable.
