i have the oppertunity to buy a 1999 mercury 90hp outboard for £4000.00 ( about $8000.00) i was wondering if any users of this engine can tell me if they are happy with theres and any problems that commonly occour with them, i currently run on a yamaha 90hp (1985)
the boat is a 16'6" phantom and used mainly in the north sea ( wooly jumpers required)for fun/ski towing ( incidently they have offered 1500 trade in on my old engine.)

Ahoy, Largewake.

First, the good stuff. You will be surprized at how much more accelleration you will get from the Merc. Bigger displacement means more low and medium speed torque.

Neither good nor bad. You will not find it as smooth or economical as the Yamaha.

Bad. The Mercs are prone to a rough idle and a rough transition from idle.

We had a Merc 90, 2000, on my son's boat. I hated it, but I am quite spoiled by my 4 stroke.

Good luck. :)

Go ahead and buy a new one for less around $5800 new. Not sure how many quid that is and what is a quid? Just got back from London and still wondering.
