Given the difficulty in finding the part you need, $200 is a bargain. I just bought a serviceable 1972 Johnson (hydroelectric shift) for $150 just because the shift switch in the owner's control unit went bad.

If you buy a control unit from craigslist, ebay, etc., make sure it is the correct one because the selectric shift units and the hydroelectric shift units are not the same.

i went with the toggle method without reverse hooked up. I have yet to use reverse where I wakeboard because there is no current.

K - I guess I am assuming that your motor is a hydroelectric shift. If so, you might want to keep an eye out in the classifieds and auction sites for a control unit with a yellow plug on the engine end of the wiring harness. Evinrude or Johnson (the Johnson works via a shift switch which is tripped by the throttle/shift lever) will work.

As others have said, used parts are a gamble but the risk is the same as if the control unit came with the motor - a control unit from either source is old and you have to ask questions before you buy.
