OK hears a question for you all out here. I have a 40 hp sea horse that had pully stearing. I took it off the boat it was on. And am goning to try to use it on a boat that has push/pull on it all ready. Can i use the pully braket on there to bolt the push/pull cross over on to it??

Also The guy i got it from said the motor didnt run so he threw it a way:eek:. (Uh the nerve of some people) And also threw away the mounting braket too.
so what im left with to work from it a cable with a nut on the end. I have a mounting braket that worked. Should i mount it so that it turns the same amount boath ways? Ill post pics tomorrow.

it need to turn equally both ways, i have use a piece of angle to make the connecting bracket. just the sure to use a either a nylock nut, or double nut, as a jam nut. nothing worse than a link coming loose at full speed.

Well i have it centered and the motor turn the same amount boath ways.

It just dosnt turn verry far. Hooked up to cables on the other boat it turned a hole lot more. I mean considerably more.

Is it normal not to turn much??

I think the motor is not turning very far because the pivot point (on the L bracket you made) brings the pivot point too far foward. Moving it more rearward will cause the motor to turn more for the same amount of push/pull on the steering cable. I know it looks tight in there, but you need to relocate the pivot point more rearward to get the full benefit of that steering cable.

Also try to get the cable mounted to the transom, instead of in the splashwell. That will allow the motor to tilt up and over it more like contemporary motors with the steering tube built in. The closer you make that setup to a motor with a steering tube built in, the better it will perform.

Re: Push/pull cable fastening

OK i took her out on the lake today and it worked fine at slow speeds. Anything over slow, it flips to the side. And where i fastened the little rod to the cable acts like a pivit point and flicks the rod out and i cant steer back i have to kill the motor and move every thing back to center.

If you can understand that how do i fix it??

Ill try to post a pic

Re: Push/pull cable fastening

I think I have a good idea of what your talking about. I had messed around with a setup like this on an old Evinrude that did not have a through tube.

The end of the cable (the ram) needs to be mounted as close to the tilt pivot point of the motor. Then the link rod can be mounted against the motor in line with the motor cover.

The problem as I see it is the ram and the link and the mounting point are too far forward to get the 9.5" of ram travel to move the motor enough to make steering work well.

There is only about 9.5 inches of travel in the steering ram, and you need to design your mountings to make 4.75" of travel move the motor from center to full left or right. That means that the attachment point on the motor must be fairly close to the motors turning axis. On my 40hp, that distance is only about 5" or so.

Get out a ruler and see where you need to attach the link to the motor to get 4.5" of travel move the motor from center to full left or right, then "reverse engineer" your mountings from there.
