Re: Put down a deposit - any advice? 2003 Regal 2200

Since it's turning into an engine discussion, at 22 feet i feel 270hp is on the bubble. That is the optional engine on my tiny, much lighter,18 footer. If I'm spending the money on a nice 22 footer, I'm going to get one of the larger engine options.

I do not think 270 is on the bubble. After being on a Chap Sig 27 cruiser with just 300hp and a B3, 270 in a much lighter boat will be just fine.

Main use for the boat will be with a couple/few of us on board most of the time. I rarely see more than 6. If that was the case, I would be looking at a larger boat. The boat doesn't need to run wild for speed, just to carry a moderate load with good performance. Of course, the occasional run by myself will welcome faster speeds.
So, it sounds as if the price is in line, if not a bit high. I don't mind paying a little more for something that is in great shape if all else checks out. There is too much $ in our area for a heckuva deal on a boat for the most part, so I'm not expecting to steal it from anyone.
I really appreciate all the advice, and more is welcome.
Cheers!

Marginal power only if top speed is a big deal to you. If low to mid 40s is fine, then with the DP there will be no problem planing that boat.

And even then, it's 270 hp at the prop in a 22' boat, that's a lot! remember the 80s when the 260 (that's HP at the crank) was in everything, and we all thought it was so powerful? ;)

I think you have a good mindset for this boat, I agree with you in that I don't mind paying a little more for a beautiful well maintained boat either.

I hope everything works out as it looks like your going to have a great time on the water with a beautiful ride!

Update: She's mine!
All checked out. I'm having all service done to get summer ready and only needed a new door latch and spark plugs. Turns out the scan of the engine showed 240 hours, not 103. I guess the gauge went out and was changed. 240 hours on an '03 is perfectly acceptable to me, and actually a bit more comforting than the 103. And, compression hovered just over 200, which seems pretty awesome. The trial was great. After about 20 minutes, I had to have.
Can't wait to get out on the water soon. Of course, obligatory pics will follow. Final paperwork in a couple days and she will soon be on the lift so I can stare at her from my couch, too.
Thanks for all who chimed in with info and advice.

Frankly you shouldn't be surprised by the compression test, that motor should go well beyond 1000 hours with proper care and maintenance, Other then that CONGRATULATIONS!!!

200 psi on a compression test . . . must be a diesel engine :noidea:

anyway, congrats. :thumb:

Congrats! Beautiful boat!

200 PSI on a compression test can mean there's carbon build up in the combustion chambers and on top of the pistons. That can happen if the PO ran premium gas in it (it does not need it, don't use it). I would run a few tanks of Techron treated fuel through it to clean that up. I'm not a believer in most of those chemical "miracle" engine elixirs, but I have actually tested Techron on my motorcycle and verified that it really does remove deposits on intake valves. I am 99% positive it removes them from the combustion chamber as well.

I agree! I have a Q6 which is about 20.5 ft which has a 4.3 carb 190hp and I find that fine. We pull tubes with 6-8 people on board all the time and have a top speed of around 46 +/- I have no complaints but it is my first boat and have nothing to compare? I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

The mechanic, who has done this 30 years said the compression is that of a new engine. I have no worries.

Very cool, congrats! I was wondering about the compression. My sled has a 4 stroke motor that came from an R1 sport bike(crotch rocket). New, the compression was over 200 and it's still over 200 7 years later......

As far as the price, you gave a very fair price. Not sure where you're located, but in N WI and Mn quality boats easily sell for thousands over book value. If you didn't buy it, the next guy in line would have. NADA just gives a starting point what the boat is worth.

Looking forward to the pix........

.

X2...NADA doesn't even pass as a bad joke the numbers are so far off depending on the boat.

NADA is merely a depreciation schedule, and not so much a market survey. As such, it tends to overstate the value on newer boats and understate the value on older boats . . .

It is best to use a source that is more based on market information.
