Merc 4.3lx, alpha 1 gen 2. Accidentally put quicksilver premium gear oil in my lower unit. At the time I didn't think it really mattered. I now realize the quicksilver high performance gear oil is recommended, but is it really that big of a deal?

I've only had the boat out for a month, using only on the weekends. Gone top speed only a handful of times for a couple minutes, rest was just trolling. So I don't think I would have caused any damage...

Is it worth taking the boat out and changing it? I'll be taking the boat out of the water around September anyways.

From what I understand the main drawback of the premium oil is how it handles high temperatures which I assume it would only reach after extended running. Can the gear oil reservoir be used to check the condition of the oil? Does the oil in the reservoir circulate?

Thanks in advance

Totally fine, as mentioned. The Alphas have been running just fine for decades before the high performance oil went on the shelves. Just do it next time.

And no, the oil in the resovoir doesn't circulate. It is a header tank set up.
