We are attempting to put a 302 truck motor in our OMC regency boat. The motor that was in the boat had a craked head. Changed over all the parts that we could. the problem that we are having is that the disriputer from the truck engine has three wires on it and the distributer that the boat motor had only has two wires. We were not able to inter change the distributers, because of the oil pump. The engine will turn over, but we can't get any fire.

Please help.

You cannot use the automotive distributor, carb, alternator, starter, or fuel pump in your boat. They are not marinized to contain sparks, not to mention it's illegal.

okay so how do you change out the shaft on the distributor to be able to use the one that came off of the original boat motor

we need more info on your boat, HP??? yr??? to look up your wiring diagram those fields must be known, if your putting in a truck motor in your boat, I hope you took the extra time in replacing the freeze plugs to brass, and a stainless steel head gaskets?? the truck motor will more then likely work, but wont last forever if you didnt, make sure to also change the carb, and fuel pump, you dont want a big BOOM

A quick question, are you trying to put a 302 Ford motor, in place of a Chevy 305 motor? if so, bad idea! as the chevy is more suited to marine application, because it has more torque, and uses less fuel by design alone! and besides, it takes a lot less modding to develop more horssepower then the 302.

Carb and fuel pump were interchangeable the only problem that we are having is with the distributor, becasue of the shaft on the oil pump.

Yes it is a ford 302, but we were told that the motor that was original in the boat was a 351 windsor. The boat is a 1992 Regency 19' omc

Is the problem the oil pump shaft diameter? Not sure about marine applications on the Ford engines but I do know that in the automotive design that the 302 used a 1/4 inch oil pump drive shaft and the 351 used a 5/16ths.

Do you have any information on the engine that came out of the boat? Maybe it was a 351 and not a 302. Or maybe your installing a 351 instead of a 302.

Post the original engines serial number.

The info that we have on the original baot motor is that it is a 351 winsor we still have the original engine, but it is no good, because the block is cracked. The motor that we are putting in is a 302.

The 502BPRAMK identifies the engine as a 1992 5.0 liter Ford.

Once we get the engine running in the boat we will also need to know how to make sure that the linkage cables are hooked up correctly.

im not a ford expert but does'nt the 305 and 351 use differnet manifolds? I know the gm engines can inter change but I thoght the fords wont. if I were you I would convert to a gm 350. the ford marine parts are starting to get rare. while your at it get rid of the cobra and put on a merc or volvo

The cobra is gone other than the outdrive. Ford mnifolds must interchange, because the 302 motor is in the boat and everything is conected, other than we have no fire.

The exhaust manifolds will interchange. The difference between the 302 and the 351 is the width of the engine. If you didn't have any problems connecting the exhaust rubber connectors to the Y-pipe you probably took a 302 out of the boat also. Not that this is going to help you with your problem to make that distributor fit.

Everything is hooked up, had a few problems hooking up rubber hose to exhaust manifolds, but got them in. Only problem is getting the engine to fire. Have the old distributor and the one out of the pickup, but the only one that will fit is the one out of the pickup. i.e. the oil pump shaft size is smaller in the distributor origionally out of the boat. We used the distributor out of the pickup and it has three wires, the one out of the boat only has two wires. The engine will not fire. There is power to the + side of the coil but no spark out of coil wire.

Re: Putting a 302 truck motor in a boat that had a omc 5.0

was your boat orig electronic ignition or points? ford 5.0 motors came with electronic ignition. if your boat was using points style distributor the 5.0 distrib is incorrect for your set up. you would need an earlier points style distributor in place of the one you currently have. i believes thats the issue with the two wire or three wire problem.
