alright, i pulled the carb off to clean and install the kit. that went fine, but I am running into a couple of problems putting it all back together.

first off i cant figure out how the manual rope start component goes back on there, which is sad because it only has 1 bolt holding it in. i dont remember which way it was sitting when i took it off. can anyone help me out in this area.

i was going to try again to get the flywheel off to assist me in getting the manual start component back on, but unsuccessful again. i tightened it as much as i could and whacked it good on top of the puller bolt with no luck. its now sitting with some penetrating spray on it. i will try again tomorrow.

the main thing i want to do is get that manual rope part back on so i can put it back together and test the motor.

also, is there supposed to be a washer on the bottom of the manual start recoil?

thanks

There is no washer between the cowl and the recoil cup. Hold the recoil upside down and look at it. You will see a small metal bent down at 90 degrees. It is a couple of inches from the centre bolt. Now look in at where the recoil bolts to the cowl. You will see a small hole that will receive that little bend of metal. That little detail prevents the recoil from turning once mounted. It will help if you turn the flywheel to the point where the rope notch is in line with the mounting bolt. Be careful not to over tighten the bolt as I have seen the threads in the cowl strip out. I don't remember the torque for that bolt. It is in the manual. I'm beginning to think that flywheel is glued on. That socket is supposed to be completely clean and free of any foreign material but I have seen them glued and / or greased before. If the penetrating oil isn't getting it done try using lacquer thinner or acetone for a day. That should help to loosen glue if it's been used. Rick.

diagrams here. http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

flywheel is not glued on. it is a compression fit.

PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.

I saw that and figured that is how it worked, but with the string still out through the motor and handle still attached, it wanted to recoil back in if I pulled it out and it made things difficult.

Do you have to worry about the spring tension or anything like that on these setups, or basically if the spring is in there and in place, its doing its job.

if that is the case I am going to just take the handle off.

Well you do have to be very careful not to let the spring unwind while your working. With the center bolt in place wind a 3/8 nut on it til snug. Pull the rope out as much as you can and then tie a slip knot so your not fighting the rope while doing the task. Just keep the unit snugly together as your installing it and you should have no problem. It will have the right tension on it when your done as long as you haven't let anything slip thus far. That flywheel is starting to **** me off too! Sooner or late it will pop like TD says. Rick.
