Putting drive unit back on.... shift shaft position?

I thought my manual covered this, but I can't find it anywhere..... When putting the drive unit back on do I want the shift shaft to be positioned in neutral, forward, reverse? I thought it was neutral which puts the meeting (shift shaft and cable end) of the top of the shift shaft at 3 o'clock (starboard) and the bottom bow facing part facing at about 11 o'clock?

Thanks
Dave

What outdrive are you working on? Alpha are in forward when removing and reinstalling.

Assuming you have an alpha - both the shifter and drive need to be in FWD for reassembly.

Also assuming your manual is not a factory manual - you need to get one. Check ebay for cheap or adults only for free.

Okay I will..... but for now..... I made the mistake of pulling the outdrive with it in neutral. How can I best remedy this please? Can I turn the shift shaft on the lower end to put it in forward and what direction would be correct to do that?

Thanks
Dave

The upper shoe must be in a straight line ,control box full fwd.
The lower must be in a staright line ,fwd
any other way you might break the plastic shift shaft bushing assembly.

Put the shifter (in the boat) in forward gear, this will put the shift shaft pointing straight back.

On the drive, just rotate the shift shaft till it points straight to the front, then use a bungee cord on the prop to keep a little pressure on the gears or it will pop out and the shift shaft will rotate.

I put a new lower cable in while it was apart and don't have it connected to the engine linkage yet. I was going to do that after the drive was installed. I wanted to do it that way so I know the cable core is situated correctly in the cable housing, and then cut the cable if necessary for the 6" measurement.

Will this work?

Very good thank you. Some people mention about having to cut the cable, and I WAS very leery of that.

I assure you wouldn't have cut anything without know for sure.

So, can I do the drive unit installation without having the cable hooked up to the engine linkage first?

you need to do it the way the manual describes it. connecting it holds the shift assemblies in the proper place to install a drive, like i said , miss the shoe alignment and you will need to dis-assemble the lower unit to replace the shift shaft bushing.

Re: Putting drive unit back on.... shift shaft position?

I've got a similar problem.

Shifter is in F and the shoe is in the 12 o'clock position to line up with the shaft. The upper shaft 12 o'clock is F, 11 o'clock is N and 10 o'clock is R. Prop is locked in the CW position.

Now I have no reverse?
What did I screw up?

I put a new lower cable in while it was apart and don't have it connected to the engine linkage yet.

If you are not connected to the control, PUSH the cable, and then look under the bellhousing to make sure the connection on the bottom of the upper ss is pointed straight ahead. Then turn the lower ss (in the gearhousing) all the way clockwise and turn the prop CCW till it locks, use a bungee to hold CCW tension on the prop. You are now in forward. The top of the lower ss should also point straight ahead, if it does not pull it up and reposition it so that it does WITHOUT letting it slip out of forward. Then you should be able to put it back on, but since the cable is not held in place by the control, make sure the bottom of the upper ss stays pointed straight ahead. Good luck.
