sorry guys the motor is a 1985 johnson 25 longshaft model cj25rcos. tried to put back together but had a hard time lining up waterspout than when i had it lined up would'nt slide together leaving a gap of about quarter inch so ibolted together pulling it up tight hoping the water spout went in but don't feel comfortable about it.now gears work but when i spin prop by hand in gear than move gears backforth it won't go in referse.than i could repeat that than it would be fine again.had it apart doing ay bearing oil seals and inpeller kit.i think am going to end up dropping again and wondering if there's atrick to this.thanks.

you need to turn your fly wheel to line the splines up. you also need to check your shift rod, I am not real knowledgeable on the smaller motors though. but your foot should slide all the way into place

I just did one of these tonight. You want to definately make sure your water tube goes into the waterpump housing. That could be why you're not sliding all the way up, or your drive shaft spline isn't meshing with the crank. If you shine a flashlight into the rear portion, you'll be able to see the water tube go into the waterpump housing.

remove spark plugs and turn flywheel, use a flashlight to make sure water tube is lined up.

Re: putting lower unit back together

redroped lower unit and waterspout was ok but spline shaft spacer went off set and got a little damage so replace spacer and put back together lining up water spout and turning flywheel went together really nice.but still having problem with gears like i said earlier i can shift gears back and forth no problem but soon as i leave in gear and manually turn prop than go back to gear shift it won't go into reverse than i can turn prop again than everything is fine again any thoughts on this thanks.
