putting LU into forward gear when installing

All,

I have a 92 90HP Force

I know to put the controls into forward gear before taking off the LU.

When reinstalling LU how do I put the LU into forward gear and make sure it is correct so that the shift rod/linkage is aligned to put in the cotter pin?

I think that what you should've done is put it into forward gear, remove the LU, ==leave it into forward gear===, work on the LU and reinstall the LU...
