I'm stumped.
My 77 johnson 25 seahorse pull start will not start. After I picked up the boat I cleaned the carb and pulled the statrer cord and ran great for about 2 hours. The next day I couldn't get it to start. After some poking around I discovered my spark was gone. I've pulled the flywheel checked the key, replaced the power pack and the coils, the plugs and wires and now have perfect blue spark. the engin will not start. I've pulled the plugs and am getting a nice mist of fuel/air out of the plug holes and if I put a spark tester near the emptey spark plug holes can produce about a 4 foot flame. My shoulder is killing me from pulling the cord so I presume my compression is above 100 psi. I'm lost fuel +spark+ compression is supposed to = GO.

Can any one point me in a new direction?/

Double check that compression to be sure. You could have one that is there and the other not.

Also, check your plugs and wires. I've heard about plug wires shorting out somewhere to the motor thus no fire. Replace the plugs too if you have not done so already.

Howdy, Shane.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to Engine FAQs. Do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

sounds like too much fuel, are you sure the float is not stuck.

Re: puzzeled 77 johnson 25 pull will not start

Hmmm thanks for the tips, This morning I've checked my compression and have 100 on both cylinders. Spark is still bright blue. When I remove the plugs and pull the starter cord I still get mist out of both holes. I just removed the carb and flushed the whole thing with sea foam. Float floats, needle moves, foam passes thru all passageways. Took off the fly wheel again to inspect for any timing issue but can't find any timing set except for aligning the key with the wheel which it is. I've put sea foam directly into the cylinders but nothing. I should note that a very few times I've pulled and seen some smoke and heard a promising sound only to continue pulling to no result. Is it possible I've messed up the timing somehow? If so can anyone advise. Is 100 PSI enough. It seems fine to me considering it's a pull start. Any help is appreciated

Thanks for the tips I'm up and running. I noticed I could get it to sputter with fog in the cylider so I started working backwards untill I ended up adjusting the carb (several times) must of been running too lean / float to high. Alls well that ends well.
