now not to be out regularly, as i wouldn't think safe, but want to be able to go from island camping or friends houseboat back to ramp with proper lights at night. i don't want to hardwire them. anyone rigged anything up??? i've found some battery operated lights on here and also on ebay for 3 singles, just seeing if anyone had blazed a path on this issue. thanks

Re: pwc lights

I don't know of any state that allows operating a pwc after dark that is why they don't have lights.

Re: pwc lights

this is what was on the missouri state water patrol site link to the state boating laws:

Also, it is strongly recommended that PWCs are operated only during daylight hours. If a PWC is operated at night, the PWC must display the required navigation lights.
granted, part of the time we are down in arkansas so i should prob check there as well. that just hit me. thanks for the thought provoking!

That is just scary,, but I guess if you are really carefull and sober, 2 things that seem to be lacking around my area. There are people around here that I refuse to go near when they are driving a ski because they are wasted. All I see is drunks driving pwcs.

Wow - never even thought of that!

Mostly what I see are kids driving them...

And while I don't think it's the best idea - I guess with the proper lighting it would be OK to be out at night... but I don't think it is allowed in VA.

Re: pwc lights

the reason most states outlaw night riding is a good one. On a ski the potential for disaster is greater than in a boat, I have been boating since I was about 12 years old so 42 years of being on the water I have seen a lot of crazy things, Here is something most people don't think of hypothermia,, our water almost never goes below 60 degrees now it is close to 90,, we had a couple of kids die from hypothermia a few years ago on a ski.
they were riding with life jackets in the gulf of mexico, they entangled a rope in their intake , the ski stopped they didn't know what happened and made the mistake of trying to remove the seat while sitting on the ski in deep water it tipped and they sunk it, they spent the entire night floating in the gulf hanging on to the ski till they passed out from hypothermia and died ,the water temp was in the high 60's at the time of year that this happened. most states the water never gets over 70 degrees and you can die from that temp if you are in it long enough. Then there are the obvious issues of running aground or striking objects or having a boat run you over because they didn't see you coming etc it's just a bad idea.

Very good point. IMO It makes no sense for anyone to be out on a ski farther from land than they can swim!!

I think the originator of the thread was thinking of lake boating where land is in sight... And only if lights are used so they can bee seen!

Re: pwc lights

I saw the bow of a Larson boat that destroyed a pwc in the dark. Surprisingly low amount of damage to the boat, but the pwc is lying at the bottom of the lake in pieces. BTW, the teens that had been riding it luckily had decided to swim to an island right before impact, so no one was hurt. But the teens did get ticketed for having a pwc out after dark.

Re: pwc lights

okay, clarification time-

this would only be on a lake,

for getting back to the ramp from our friends house boat, or from an island where people often camp.

it would not be for routine night riding.

Our state regs as posted recommend pwc not operate at night, but with lights may. so state laws would be abided by if i were to do this. I was just curious if anyone had tried setting some up on theirs.

Re: pwc lights

I posted here http://www.pwctoday.com/showthread.php?t=89234

on another forum about putting lights on mine.

It turned out good, I don't ride after dark on a regular basis, but if I want to now I'm legal and safe.

BTW it really is a hoot riding on glass under a full moon.

I posted the link because my pics below didn't turn out.
