Q? about a vented prop

[FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]I bought a Laser II 13 3/4x23p prop off ebay for dirt cheap and when it arrived I found that it has the old style square vent holes.

My question is, Is it even worth trying out on my boat? Or will I just blow it out trying to get on plane?

Wellcraft Eclipse 216XL
Mercruiser 7.4l with Bravo 1 drive
Current prop Mirage Plus 14 3/4x21p
Current performance 4800rpms 58mph

I found out that there are plugs available for the old square hole vents so I'm going to pick a set up and test out both vented & unvented.

I got this prop for dirt cheap so I figure I have nothing to lose. I can always resell it for at least what i paid. Probably more.

I think that going from the 14 3/4" dia Mirage to a 13 3/4" dia Laser, will offset the RPM loss of going from 21p to 23p. If it does, I should see a couple of MPH increase. I hope. Keep your fingers crossed.

I just KNOW that this boat should/will do over 60.

just get 2 or 3 sets of solid plugs and then start with a small drill. 1/16"or so. make your own holes. work up a size at a time till you loose performance and drop back to the last size.

much cheaper and easier than buying a bunch of different sizes to dial it in

That's a pretty good idea. Because as far as I can tell, the old style square ones only come as solid plugs.

The good news?? is that when I hit something on Sat it was with the cheap Laser and not my Mirage. Didn't really damage the prop. Too bad what ever I hit took out my cav plate on the way thru.[/FONT]
