Where exactly in the cooling loop is the tell-tale? Is it truly located in such a way that it indicates the motor is receiving water, and that the water is circulating throughtout the motor (90hp 1987 vintage) to cool it? Or is it just an indication that the water pump is pulling water up?

I would be interested in seeing a diagram of how this all works. Motor here:

The Tell tale is in the dump hose off the thermostat. It will not go until the t-stat opens.

If it isn't getting enough water it will steam. When it flows, the engine is warm enough for a hole shot without cold-seize. That could vary from a few seconds to almost a minute, depending on weather and water conditions.

It won't go at all if a mud dauber or spider has found it to be desirable.

hope it helps

Does that mean I shouldn't see the tell-take stream until the motor is warm?
