Hello Everyone,
I am about to replace the gear case seals in my '57 10HP Johnson. (Serial#: 242xxx)
I have seen here offered Sierra an Mallory seal kits for that particular motor.
I am wondering about the replacement seals.
The original seals have about a 1/4' - 1/2" sealing widths. The contemporary seals only have about 1/8" of width where the seal is in contact with the shaft. Such new seals are usually used in pairs, mounted back to back, as in the newer motors.
Does anyone know what kind of seals do those kits contain? Do I need to use OEM seals?
The propshaft seal has an OMC part number 302545.
The driveshaft seal has an OMC part number 41A62. Interestingly, the BRP dealer could not find that, he said that it is not a valid OMC number?
The seals in my motor look original, the above seal numbers are stamped into them, and the '57 Evinrude part catalog also has those numbers.
I also understand that the '58 - '63 18HP motors have the same gear case as my QD-18 and same seals. That would give a "valid" number of 307563 for the driveshaft seal that was since superseded. Is that correct?
Any words of wisdom about selecting replacement seals?
Thanks, Peter
