I Put it all on and it looks good.. I need to know what this is in the ziploc back though.. looks like two bushins and a round key or something.(2nd link).?

Re: QD-21 10HP johnson

That's a screaming good deal. I can sell those engines up here for $350-$400! And all new parts to boot!

The parts in the zip lock bag are 2 seals for the lower unit. Probably drive shaft and prop shaft. The rubber thing is the grommet that goes in the top of the water pump and the little metal pin looks like the drive pin for the water pump impeller. Although it looks a tad large but thats probably just the photo.

Does your motor have the Phillips head pivot pin on the skeg of the lower unit? If not, that pin may be an internal pivot pin for the shift yoke - They were used on mid-50's 15hp motors for sure instead of the external pivot pins. I often wonder why they didn't stick with those internal pins. Sure would have caused a lot less problems with people removing the dreaded Phillips head pin, and also one less source for water intrusion.

Re: QD-21 10HP johnson

is there anyway to test the coils and condensors with an ohm meter? I got what looks to be brand new coils condensers and points.. all of THAT was already put on when i got it so my hands havent been on it.. but I have a really weak spark on one and none on the other...

Also.. I hook up the fuel line and the fuel pump doesnt spurt fuel out when it passes compression so would a fuel pump kit handle this problem? or whats my best route? This motor is in GREAT cosmetic shape and has AWESOME compression so its gonna be a strong motor

any help appreciated

Did you try cleaning and adj the points to .020 before even trying to test? New ignition system doesn't mean it was installed with skilled hands.

From the looks of the pic of the coils, looks like the coils are hooked up to the wrong set of points. The coil to the left of the point set should be hooked up to that point set.

The coils look new. Probably the points just need cleaning.

Google "test outboard motor coil" and you'll find an informative U-tube video on how to do it.

I think your right.. I Think the coils are hooked to the wrong points.. its getting a VERY weak spark on both coils.. I put a screw driver in the plug wire and spin the flywheel and it BARELY shocks me.. My old 5.5 woud lite me up.. so I think it makes since now that the points are breaking at the wrong time. But the fuel pump problem. A Rebuild kit? after that this thing will be ready

I have you all beat. I had a 1957 P-14 with a 1986 Evinrude 25hp and a 1974Johnson 6hp given to me.:D:D

Anyhow, one common mistake people make when they install new coils, is the connection to the spark plug leads. When I refurbish an armeture plate with new coils and points, I clean it thoroughly and make it like new. I usually like to install new spark plug leads to the new coils. If I use my old ones, I trim off about 1/4" off before I reconnect it to the coil. And yes, your green wire from your coil is hooked up to the wrong sets of points. Also make sure that the front surfaces of the coils match the machined surface of their mounts exactly, or your flywheel might grind on them.

Like I said, skilled hands, good eye Lindy, I wasn't even looking at wiring, more at condition. As for the pump, pull it off and check the gasket where it mates to powerhead to make sure it's still good. A kit is cheaper but a PITA to replace vs buying a new pump.

Re: QD-21 10HP johnson

Yea thats one thing I didnt catch... guy told me he replaced it all and still couldnt get a spark and gave up and just wants it gone.. So I'll switch the wires and that will hopefully make my spark considerably stronger.. And I also took the coils off and did what you said zephyr.. trimmed about a 1/4 of an inch off and reinstalled.. Well I took it off and the gasket between the two is SUPER dry and kind of crusty on the inside (block side).. would a fuel pump rebuild kit come with this gasket? and all new springs and gaskets for the inside of it?

Re: 1960 10HP johnson fuel pump help

What pump is on it, I searched high and low this morning for a pic. Is it the standard 2 inch square pump or is it the older glass filter carb bowl style?

Re: QD-21 10HP johnson

I don't see a kit, try a dealer to see if they offer one up. Judging by the gasket it would take a square pump, just a matter of putting on a longer fuel line.
