I searched for this topic but didn't find a definitive answer. I've been on the water all my life, which means I know I have a lot more to learn. I know my insurance rates will drop if I complete a safety course. So there seems to be a lot of these, including one online that I have almost completed (and frankly didn't find very difficult). My question is.. which are usually recognized by insurance companies and which are really only for my personal edification? There are atleast 2 organizations locally that offer courses - US Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Aux. (I think). Is there an "official" course? Are some better than others? Is this boatersafety (online) a "qualified" course?

Re: Qualified safety courses

I would ask your insurance angent to be sure. I know you'll get good answers here about the various courses, but its the agent's answer to this question that counts.

BL...

Re: Qualified safety courses

I have taken the Coast Guard course twice one time with the whole family and also the U.S. Powers Squardons twice. For me no insurance company has ever had any discount but both groups say many do. I must tell you both groups the last time I took them had shortened the course to the point almost worthless. When I ask why their answer was people just looking for an insurance break will not sign up for the longer course. First time I took the courses the Coast Guard was A little better on saftey equip (Life Jackets, fire extengiser, back flame arester, ect. Also the Coast Guard was a lot better teaching aid to navagation and rules of the road, who has right away. Power Squardons had a much better Navigation class complete dividers and parrellal rule and a protractor. Last time I took each class not worth taking. If the class is not at least 13 weeks your getting the short class and are not going to learn much.

Re: Qualified safety courses

Howdee, I am an insurance agent. I took an online version of a boating safety course and my company accepted it. I think in general the course offered by the coast guard will be the course most likely to get you the discount, but every company can be different. Some companies as mentioned earlier may not give a discount.
First place to ask the question is with your personal agent or call the company if you don't have an agent type company.
Any safety course is good one if you haven't had several all ready.... Good luck and safe boating.

You might want to ask your agent the following while you are at it.

1. If I am driving my boat and hit a rock under the water damaging my boat and motor, am I covered?
2. If someone driving another boat hits me and damages my boat am I covered? Will it matter if the other person is or is not insured.
3. If I run out of fuel or can't get started up -- does my policy cover marine assistance or towing? If yes are there limitations?
4. If I get tangled in a commercial fishing net damaging my boat & the commercial fishing net, how am I covered?
5. If someone steals my kicker motor off my boat am I covered, If yes is it going to be a used or depreciated value or full replacement value?
6. If someone steals my expensive rods - reels and tackle of my boat am I covered. If yes will it be depreciated or replacement. Will my homeowner's policy cover this loss if my boat policy does not?
7. If my inboard boat motor freezes and damages the motor this winter am I covered?
8. Am I covered to operate my boat in any waters anywhere or are there territorial limitations to my policy?
9. Can anyone drive my boat with my permission and be covered.
10.Can I drive someone elses boat and have coverage extended to that borrowed or rented boat?
11.If I buy a new boat and trade my old boat in do I have temporary coverage? If yes what are the limitations of that coverage and what time frame do have to work within?
12. If I hit a swimmer in the water with my boat and hurt them, am I covered and what are my limits of coverage? Are there options for increased limits?
13. What is my deductible and what type of losses will it apply to.
14. Are boat accessories covered? Items like oars, anchors, radios, flare guns, navigational equipment. Will it be replaced at a full or depreciated or used value? Ask them to define what are and what are not accessories. Will fishing tackle be considered an accessory.
15. If I turn in a loss what is your company going to do? Will they raise my rates or change my coverage? What are the chances that I might get canceled if I turn in a loss? What if I have two losses?

16. If my boat is damaged or even totalled. How will the loss be handled. Replacement value or depreciated value. What & when do these limitations apply.

Good Luck........
