Hello again..Yesterday i took a look at a few motors this kid was selling for his dad. Just pulled like 6 out of the barn. Looked at a couple of poor gamefishers, and ted williams with no interest and he states he has one more in the back he hasn't had a chance to pull out yet. I go in to look at it, and it's an Awesome shape cd-14 5.5hp johnson. 57 i believe..This thing is so clean it still has the original red paint flaking off the fuel lines. i wouldn't think it had ever been run except for the small amount of residue in the glass water seperator. Red paint on the head doesn't even look to have been heated. Gave him 100 bucks for the motor and fuel tank and off i go. SO.. I will be following the awakening instructions. Specifically though, is this one of the motors that i need to remove the power head to replace the impellor? And if so.. Is it necessary to replace the head gasket? I will post some pictures of it tonight. She's a real looker..

You do not have to take the head off, but besides the water pump, you will probably need new coils, and condensers, and change the gear oil. That engine could turn out to be a real bargain.

Re: question about a cd-14

I really wasn't going to buy it, as i just gave 80 bucks for an old 52 qd14 10 horse lase week, but in nowhere near this condition. I already put impellor, wires, gapped and cleaned points on the 10..With a carb kit she's ready to run. Ill sell the 10 for capitol to put into the 5.5. The plastic/resin badge is still in perfect condition on the front of the 5.5. SO..with my merc 50, 52 johnson, 57 johnson, and 4 horse yammie..I guess im a collector.

I believe on this motor you will have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod from the shift lever (if it's like my 1955 5.5hp). You have to pull the powerhead - not necessary to replace the head gasket, but there is a gasket where the powerhead bolts to the base which will probably have to be replaced.

Re: question about a cd-14

man..i was hoping that this model was one that didn't need to do that, but..I suppose to do it right, im looking at pulling it all apart anyways..I know i should have the manual, but i have bought like 5 manuals in the past year because i like to make things run. At 40 bucks a pop, im hoping to find a breakdown rather than go that route. Thanks for the info..

There's nothing to removing that powerhead, Woody. Just take off the fuel lines from the manifold and carb. and get a GOOD FITTING flathead screwdriver and remove the screws that hold on the powerhead and carefully lifit it off. THere will be, I'm pretty sure, a carbon-seal setup on the bottom of the crank that contains several parts that have to be put in the right order and you may want to replace the carbon seal and o-ring it just for good measure. I'll bet you can have it off in 15min. or less. You'll spend more time replacing the coils..:)
That's a really nice find, I'm jealous. I'd like to have a nice one like that, too.
If you could post a pic I know we'd all love to see it.
later,
JBJ
