You might pull the distributor and have it checked out by an auto electric shop. "Distributor" problems can be anything from a bad coil to burned points or a bad ground.

The owner did state that the problem with the distributor was burned points, so I'm planning on replacing that as well as the coil (which he already has a new coil, just not installed yet) . I guess that somewhere along the way he or someone else had a non OEM ignition component (condenser, voltage regulator, etc) that didn't send the proper voltage to the distributor. Sound about right?

Burnt points and coil.... I smell bypassed resistance wire....

For a quick fix, just take a points file will you and give them a quick clean, that should be enough to get the engine running. If the owner balks, suspect something bigger!
