Hi there everyone, just have a quick question. I bought an older evinrude outboard today im guessing maybe late 50's to mid 60's but i really have no idea im just judging on what ive seen of other motors. The serial number i found on it reads : 3012-96991. If anyone can tell me the year, model and hp of it and maybe the oil mixture for it that would be awesome.
thanks

Re: Question about an old evinrude

Howdy, Qdot.

Welcome to iboats. :)

That is a 3HP made for 1952-1954.

Fuel mix is 24:1
Plugs are Champion J6C, gapped at .030"
Points are set at .020".

One of the greatest little engines.

I think that would be a 1953, 3hp "Lightwin." Fuel/oil mixture should be 24:1.

Re: Question about an old evinrude

That serial number sounds kind of high.
S/N up to 09000 is a 1952
S/N 09001 to 34000 is a 1953
S/N 34001-up is a 1954

Re: Question about an old evinrude

Thanks guys i appreciate it. Yeah i bought this motor at the scrap metal yard the other day for 14 bucks, its all complete nothing missing and has great "patina" on the casing. I tried to start it up but i wasnt getting any spark so i dont know if i need new plugs or if i need a new magneto or anything like that. Any advice on how to get this thing going would be awesome.

Re: Question about an old evinrude

Check out the thread, "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard." Check for compression first, then pull the flywheel and check the coils/points/condensors/wires. Very simple and great little motor. Worth getting running again if it has compression.

Re: Question about an old evinrude

#1--check compression to see if it's worth fixing. Look for both cylinders pretty close to one another and hopefully above 65 lbs.

#2--If compression checks out, pull the flywheel and check the coils, they're almost sure to be bad.

#3--After your spark is jumping at least a 1/4" gap, you'll probably need to rebuild your carburetor.

#4--Check the lower unit oil to see if there's any water in it. Those little 3's have some tough little lower units-or so I hear, so I'll bet it's probably o.k.

You might check the FAQ's section on this forum on "waking a sleeping outboard" for some good step by step instructions for troubleshooting your motor.
Glad you saved it from the scrapyard!!!:)

So you liked that "patina" eh??:D
Good luck,

Re: Question about an old evinrude

It definitely has good compression so i think im okay there. But yeah i ordered some plugs and some points so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully the coils arent done on it though. How hard are parts to find for these motors?

Re: Question about an old evinrude

That motor was made for many years and parts are easy to get. All it takes is money. Or you can even get some stuff free if you have the right friends. www.aomci.org
