question about an outdrive

My friend got a boat it has an 4cly 170hp.The yr is an 86, problem is it doesn't have an outdrive. He's looked at a few but acording to the specs it should be an 1.84,a dealer here has 1.50 and a 1.81 just wondering if the1.50 would work and would he have to change the prop also the 1.81 is newer but I was told it would boog the engine?????????????? so that's my ? could he go with the 1.50 or the 1.81 and what kind of mods would it entail.

And who told you that? Assuming the original outdrive was an Alpha, then as long as the new one is an Alpha, NOT A GEN II, then you should be good to go.

original outdrive was an Alpha. what does that mean? the 1.81 is a merc, I'm asuming the oringal was too.

1.50 and 1.81 it's just the gear ratio most likely your alpha will be an alpha 1.50 made by mercruiser

1.81 is probably the steepest you will get away with. 1.50 will cause you issues. I think 1.84 is close to stock.

if the specs are calling for a 1.84 then the 1.81 would be fine, you would not see a performance difference. the 1.81 might be an sei drive that the dealer is selling you, and if new is fine, comes with a 3 year warrantee

Stay away from the 1.50 it's a V-8 ratio. Both the 1.84 or 1.81 will act the same as far as engine speed and rpm's.

Look at the chart I've attached, under 170 4-cyl.
