question about building a raised back deck.

I am wanting to build a raised deck on the back of my 16 foot boat. The gas tank for the boat is a 6 gallon portable tank. Can that be covered by the back deck I plan on building? Or would that cause gas fumes to build up under the deck?

Post some pics of your boat and tell us what you plan to do for the deck so we can see what you have to work with.

Maybe you'd have enough room to install a permanent tank with an external vent.

My boat is a 1994 Sea Nymph FM161. Unfortunately, due to the snow and bitter cold up here in the north, I only have one picture of it from the summer.

To answer other questions, what I wanted to do, was basically run it flat with the top of the splashwell, out about 3 feet toward the front of the boat, and then down to finish it off. I'll see if I can do a diagram on MS Paint, haha. Here is the back of the boat.

Here is a little drawing I did on MS paint. If it doesn't show well in the picture, the orange is the proposed project. Red is the gas can, and green is the battery. They both sit under the splashwell right now.

you can do that but it must be vented or fumes can accumulate causing fire/explosion hazzard

I thought I attached it in my first reply, but I guess it didn't work, I'll try to edit that. I don't have any pictures of the boat entirely, I just have a picture of the back. This is a picture of the exact same boat, with the exact same specs, just not my boat. Here is the back area. The vinyl that is on this boat, was rotted on my boat.

You will fine however vents are mandatory vent - iboats and you might consider a bilge blower. Gas fumes collect and settle LOW and you need adequate ventilation that will facilitate air movement. Possibly a round vent or tow in the front face and an exit vent.

Yeah, I would rather not be a statistic either. I wouldn't mind leaving the front open too, and just framing it in nicely with aluminum. Would that give me enough ventilation?

Yes that would work. Consider what ventilation the vinyl flap gives now.

Thanks for all of the help guys! I think I'll put the deck on and leave the front open. That way I have easy access to the battery and the gas can, and I don't blow myself up! Haha.

If your deck is wood be sure to use all stainless steel screws and fasteners....all others will rust with time...

Hey Grizz welcome aboard! You've got a very nice SN there and a nice clean slate for a back deck that is only liimited by your imagination. Here is the answer to your question about ventilation - Ventilation - Natural Ventilation

My SN below has port aft livewell and forward of the well is a compartment. On the starboard side is the battery hatch and forward of it is another compartment. The 6 gal fuel tank is in the center with a hatch over it with no front and it's strapped down to a drip pan to keep the deck below clean.
