Question about Captain's Call Exhaust

I have a 2007 Caravelle 237 that came with the Corsa Captain's Call exhaust installed from the factory. My engine is a Mercruiser 350 MAG.

My question is about how quiet should the exhaust be with the Captain's Call exhaust turned off, meaning the exhaust is exiting through the prop under water? When I switch mine from thru-hull to thru-prop, I get a significant reduction in the sound, but you can still hear a bit of the exhaust coming out the thru-hull outlets. Is this normal?

Please don't turn this thread into a debate about loud exhaust and who likes/dislikes them. I would appreciate any experience or knowledge about the sound levels from a more technical standpoint.

Howdy,


Those "valves" are just round metal plates inside the tubing that open and close with solenoid operated actuator that "turns" them approx 90 degrees.

They don't seal perfectly. They should still close enough such that most of the noise is eliminated.

You should be able to open the rubber flappers (on the outside) if you don't have inline mufflers, and use a flashlight to see how the "butterfly" valve opens and closes.

If you cannot see the valves in there, you may have to pull them and observe the operation. You can also usually operate them manually.

It should look something like the one below (albeit a leeeetle smaller and operated by a simple electromagnetic solenoid)



I had them on my previously installed High Technology OMC 460...... They don't have adjustments on them but yours may.....

I left them on the floor when I replaced with the 454. They were just too loud. If I can ever get a decent set of marine mufflers like Corsa etc......I might just put them back on!!

Mine are the same way. Still kinda loud when shut. Rick is right they are just a small butterfly flap inside there. It is in no way a machined fit. I am not sure there is a way to really quiet them down easily. How about the rubber flaps on the end, has anyone had any luck with those?

I made my own butterfly style valves in ss and operate them with intake vacuum to Bimba air cylinders. I spent a lot of time making the butterflies fit well, but still leak 3-5% of exhaust past it. If it's an issue, you *could* bond a thin rubber strip on at the sealing edges of the disk to get 100% seal.

My Captains Call on my 2003 Crownline does the exact same thing. Always has.

I have Corsa as well. When running on muffs, I get cooling water flow out the thru hull tips so I know it's not a 100% seal, but it reduces the noise substantially.
