someone wants me to hand paint the name of their boat on the side before it goes in the water. They want like three different colors, is there a certain kind of paint I have to use, I don't know much about this. what prep needs to be done? Any help would be great.

welcome Aaron, don't know what paint, but the prep is essential to it staying on. all wax, oil, etc. off. i would think and epoxy paint would last longest, but work with it before, doing the boat. have you thought about doing art work and having a decal made.

The thing is i'm on a time crunch, it has to be done this weekend so not much time for a decal. if I were to tape off a section would i need to lightly sand it or primer it? and then what about sealing it?

Re: question about custom painting boats

I have had one name painted in a two colors to match the boat

The guy just cleaned the hull with solvent and painted it

He just worked freehand with sign painters brushes and some kind of paint like you would use on pin stripes

Order a custom made decal. Meanwhile, if you only need a name for the week-end use cheap spray paint for the graphic then wash it off immediately when you're done and you'll have a clean space for the real thing.
