I just bought an old boat with a 1978 Evinrude 115. The engine runs fine, but yesterday while I was running it on the ears I noticed water pouring out of one of the two quarter size holes that are about half way down the back of the engine. Sorry I don't know exactly what they are called. I've ran the engine 5 or 6 tims previously, but I don't remember water exiting there.

I went ahead and took the boat out for about 30-45 minutes and it ran fine, but the water continued to come out of one of those holes. However, the lake was very choppy and the holes were sitting just above the water line, meaning they we getting water in them from the waves. It didn't seem like the constant stream that I was getting while I was running it on the ears.

Does this sound normal?

Thanks in advance or any help or advice.

Re: Question about Evinrude 115 (1978)

I assume that you're speaking of the two exhaust relief holes that exist just under the rear portion of the hood pan.

If they weren't there, the exhaust couldn't escape at the lower rpms which would result in having the engine die out..... if exhaust can't escape, air cannot enter the crankcase.

There is an inner housing within that housing. Water fills the area between them for cooling purposes, otherwise that outer housing would get excessively hot..... VERY!

Some engines have water flow out those holes while others do not.... nothing to be concerned about.

Yes, those are exactly the holes I was talking about. Thank you very much. Now I'll feel a lot better on my fishing trip this evening!!
