Does this engine take a special tank and line set? Was told some older engines had pressurized tanks. Also best place buy tank and line set.

Re: Question about Gas tank for 1959 5HP Sea King

Welcome!

I know that part (if not all) of the Gale division of OMC (which made the SeaKIng) had already gone away from pressure tanks by 1959 for remote tanks using fuel pumps. I'm guessing that your motor has a gravity fed internal tank??? Does it have a fuel line connector for a remote tank? If it has two pins, it uses a fuel pump (non-pressure tank), and if it has three pins, it uses a pressure tank. Pressure systems can be converted to fuel pump systems in most cases.

Welome to iBoats. Post a pic of your classic and we can easily answer your question. Your motor I believe is late enough, that it has a fuel pump on it. Those would take a single line tank and those are available anywhere OMC parts are sold. If you look on Craigslist, you will likely see them a lot cheaper.

Yea, that one looks like the modern day single line tank. Funny....that motor has the same midsection as my '54 Johnson CD-11 and Evinrude Fleetwin.

Gale motors NEVER had pressure tanks. They had fuel pumps as early as 1955. Evinrude and Johnsons had pressure tanks. So much for the old wives' tale that Gales are obsolete Johnsons.

I don't know Frank. That midsection was obsolete on Johny/Rudes, after 1955 and Gale used it 4 years later.

I prefer "similar, but different", rather than obsolete. Heck, many models weren't even very similar.

Nice looking motor! I can easily see from the pic that you have a non-pressure system with a two pin fitting as FR stated would be found!

Yea, that motor is a thing of beauty. Low hours and good care is a good bet.

Yea, Gales had a totally different powerhead. They actually were non-detachable heads on the 5's all through production, even back to the days of the old "wedge motors" Funny thing too, I seen the same basic wedge motor design in the 14hp Fastwin being used on the 12hp Sea King direct drive model. I sold one of those to a guy once and he about took out a dock with it. LOL

I noticed this too. It has the squared-off exhaust/water outlet that was used in the older OMC motors. The mixture knobs are also the flat-faced items that were on the 57 and older OMCs.

Yep, I bet part for part, everything below the powerhead gasket, is interchangeable with my 1954 - 55 CD's and Fleetwin. The only thing on the powerheads that are interchangeable is the ignition systems. Gale had their own engine molds, far different from Johny/Rude. My '47 Sea King looks like it has the same igntion as the old Johnson TD's

TN-xx Johnsons and 1951-54 5D10 Gales shared the same neutral clutch lower unit. At the same time. The 12hp wedge head Gale was the same as the Evinrude Elto 12hp Speedster. Then Evinrude put needle bearings in it and it became the 14hp Fastwin. The 1.5hp gale was the same as the 1948-51 Evinrude 1.5hp Sportwin. The 1960-63 Gale 60hp was the same as the 1960-63 Johnson and Evinrude 75hp except for bore size, and it used less gas. There also was an Evinrude that used the 5hp Gale wedge head, but I don't remember when. Hey, I can't remember everything. How'd we get going down this road anyway?
