Question about gaskets and sealing?

I just rebuilt my 1989 Evinrude 60 HP 3 cylinder with VRO. When I put the gaskets for the exhaust manifold cover and the thermostat housing I did not use any type of sealant along with the gasket, such as Gell Seal 1000, RTV or Permatex. Is this going to be a problem? Thanks for the help.

Re: Question about gaskets and sealing?

Maybe...Maybe not bass-man. It's always good to use some kind of gasket sealer on dry gaskets. I would advise against RTV, gel-seal unless mating crankcase halves and permatex. Permatex gets to darn hard. Even P-2 will after a while. I like the gasket sealer I get from Bomby. Use it on just about every thing. Bolts especially. This stuff is not new and a guy I know once gave me a can of GM sealer and it was the same stuff. Brownish color to it. Probably can get it from NAPA or someplace like that. Brush on type application.
Hope we have helped some.

Re: Question about gaskets and sealing?

By maybe or maybe not, do you mean that it may leak around those gaskets. Are they water jakets that run through the exhaust manifold area that my leak out of the exhaust cover gasket. i can easily add some sealant the the thermosata housing cover, but it will be a pain to do it to the exhaust cover gasket now the the engine has been reassymbled. Should I just see what happens after I run it, and then if it leaks , take of the exhaust cover and add some sealant?

Give it a run first before getting to excited about ripping off exhaust covers and such. If the bolts were tightened from the middle out and torqued, you may not have any problems. If you do have a weeper, just snug the bolt a little and see if it stops. If you did a good job on cleaning gasket surfaces, you may not have any worries.

before you install the new gaskets, rub chapstick on both sides of the gasket. It will seal and when you go to take it off again it will remove all in one piece with no scraping. It works great if you have to keep going into the carb. no mess and you can keep removing the gasket and reinstalling.

Suzuki40

Hooty, Im not B.S. ing you. Mainly on carbs, before you put the gaskets on rub them with chapstick. the next time you take them off they will pop right off. If you are testing or tuning it perfect because you dont ruin the gasket by putting sealer all over it.
Test my idea out...you will always use it after that.

Suzuki40

Xcusme, You can make all the jokes about it you like. but, I wouldnt put this on here if it didnt work. It wouldnt be hard to try it out on a spare part to see what I mean...Im not kiddin you. on and off with your gasket as many times as you need. and iff you take it apart years later, all gasket material comes off clean.

Suzuki40

That's cool 'zuki. I'll remember that and try it out.

I still think a string on your sparkplug wire would kill the engine. ;)

c/6

Hooty
