I have a 1440 flat bottom Jon boat that i have recently bought for duck hunting, my question is tomorrow I am going to buy a 25-hp 1960 Gale Sea King to put on the back and before I did I wanted to get some advice on how safe this may be. I don't plan on going full throttle or anything i will be hunting sloughs so its going to be almost impossible but i do plan on hunting the ohio river some. Also this boat is riveted.

For a 14' with a transom width of 4.5' (this is a guess) per the boat builders hand book the max HP is 16 with a flat bottom.
Id get one close to that number but not over, save the extra cash for gas.

Re: Question about Hp rating?

And Alumacrft sez:
Model 1448 = 25hp
Model 1442NCS = 25hp
Model 1432LT = 15hp

Model 1440 is not listed on the site I was looking at. I was looking at 2010 models. But we know there is a capacity plate on it, don't we?

I have a 1432LT and it is fast with a 12hp, largest I've had on it. I can't imagine doubling the horses. Be sure to wear your life jacket and install a kill switch.

There is a kill switch installed, also this is a older Jon with 3 bench seats. Like I said I don't plan on going full throttle or anything I just wanted to know if there were any other risk. I know there is plate on boats that give the recommendations but If this boat had one I would be asking this question Im not sure what year or type of boat this is so I cant look up the regulations.

to my understanding there really is no regulation on that jon, those plates are ignored by the vast majority of commercial fisherman and unless it says U.S Coast Guard its only a recommendation to keep the boat manufacturer and insurance companys liability to a minimum...however a 14 ft is pertty small for the ohio but if its 40in across the bottom thats not to bad...but then again every once in a while you can catch me out there in a 12 ft vhaul skulling along...but I was raised on the ohio running small boats so experiance plays a big role...I like a big wake:D I would run the 25 gale but thats me...not you:cool:

Re: Question about Hp rating?

I would think you may ride with the bow high a lot....you and that heavy motor out back on that small boat is going to make that boat sit low in the stern ...

personally i would worry about the power, the motor would offer, just the weight hanging back there ..you might not be braced well enough for such a heavy motor..you could buy a 1985 or newer 15 hp and it will probably weight a lot less and be close to the same power....maybe 5 hp less....

Re: Question about Hp rating?

i had a 1448 with a 25 hp , the rating was for a 20hp . their was no problem with the weight distribution or speed. he only issue i had was fuel consumption.
