Question About Hydrofoils

I bought a hydrofoil for my 17' Maxum 1750 SR as i use it to pull my kids on tubes and kneeboards and they don't like when i go fast enough to be on plane (some are quite young). My question is this, the first time out I blew out the water pump and I'm wondering if the hydrofoil had anything to do with that or if it was purely coincidence. I'd had the motor running in the yard on muffs earlier that day checking a few things and it was pumping water then. Being that the hydrofoil is well behind the intake, I'm inclined to believe it was just a coincidence, but it makes me leery to put it back on! Thanks in advance for your input!

How do you know your water pump blew? Did you overheat? Hydrofoil would have zero impact on water intake.. when did you last change impeller?

Just coincidence
If you reved the motor to high on muffs that would burn the impeller up

Yes, the engine overheated. I tore it down and the impeller was shot. I just got the boat last year (used), so I have no idea what kind of shape it was in. I was told it was less than 2 years old, but one never knows. I didn't THINK the hydrofoil would cause it, but it was a strange coincidence to me that it was running fine and pumping water, then a couple of hours later we go to the lake and it burns up the impeller... At any rate, the hydrofoil sucked and I took it off anyway.

Thanks for the input though guys! I appreciate it!

Just change it every 2 years and you should be fine unless you run it with no or low water supply. When they go they like to detonate. Mine went last year on the new to me boat and just wanted to get a couple days use before the weather went to crap. I keep a spare onboard now (not really something you can change on the water in an Alpha though). We are lucky it didn't go 25 miles from the dock.
