Question about latex paint??

Over the years I have accumulated about 20, one gallon cans of latex paint. They are anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 full.

The county has a hazardous waste drop off program a couple of times a year but they clearly state don't bring latex paints. They say they are not toxic.

The trash man wont take the cans either, he says that as long as the paint is still liquid they will not take it.

What do you guys do with your old paint??? I am thinking the only way to get rid of it is to mix it with oil dry or kitty litter so it is more just a paste,,, bag it, and then hope the trash company will take it.

Any ideas???

Let them dry and set them out to trash. Or ask the manager @ your local home depot if you can dispose in their dumpster.

Just crack the lids a little and let them dry some and then throw them in the garbage.

Flathead, same answer as oddjob let them dry out then dispose of as you would the thrash. You only have to worry if they are oil base.

When I used to work in the County road dept. Doing traffic maintenance work, you know those guys out on the highway painting the road lines, that paint is waterbased latex. We would get 120, 55gal drums after a year with them all empty we would hire a company to come in and crush them. then they would be tanken to the recycling center.

What oddjob said - just got rid of about 25 cans that way, took about 1 week for them to dry out and about 4 weeks to disperse them in the garbage cans (didn't want to throw them all out at the same time and cause the garbage man to investigate). If you need them to dry out quicker, add some saw dust to them.

I thought you disposed of your old paint in Lowes Parking Lot. I always see big splatters of paint in their lot. The ones with buggy cart tracks going through them and tracks of cars. :D

Geez guys. Where are your environmental ideas. Best thing is to take all 20 of the cans, mix the paint all together and use it to paint the bathroom when the wife is out. Gets rid of the paint and the girly colored bathroom in one fell swoop.

Good idea Tacklewasher - that would probably be a better color than the pale green with flat and high gloss stripes the Mrs wants to paint in our bedroom!

Back when I was young and foolish we would line them up on the old man's station wagon tail gate and kinda let them fall off as we sped down the street in front of the high school, the results looked like modern art to us :D :D

Another thought is take them to the back 40 and set them up and shoot them with some 00 buck shot.

Man what a site to see all that paint going 30 foot in the air.

Mix em together and get a rainbow effect. :D

Re: Question about latex paint??

I don't know how you dried a half gallon of paint in a week. I had about 3 quarts setting in the corner of the garage for 2 months. All it did was skin over the top, maybe an inch thick. I through it in the garbage.

The problem is, the trash man uses the drop test. He opens the can, then drops it from chest height. If anything splashes out, the whole mess gets left laying in your driveway. Oh happy day!!!

I now have an old piece of plywood that I use around the yard for various things. It gets painted with all the leftover paint I have. It is about 1/4 inch thicker than it used to be.

Roscoe - add saw dust to it - that does wonders.
