Just curious as to weather a throwable device is considered a "life-jacket" when it comes down to inspection. If Im rated for 9 people, will having 7 jackets, and two throwables be sufficient? I just need to know before I get on the water.. need to make sure Im within requirements.

Thanks.

Re: Question about life jackets

At least for NY state the answer is a resounding NO!
For 9 people you will need 9 life jackets. The throwable device is a requirement that has to do with the size of your boat.By law you must have one when your boat is over 16 foot.It may go up when your boat is over 19 or 21 foot.Children under 12 must wear a pfd whenever the boat moves.grownups must have it within easy reach.
google "boating safety" and see what comes up.

No in Mass. too. Need a mininum PDF-3 for each person. If you charter you need PFD-1 plus.

Also according to Coast Guard a cell phone is not a safety device. But when on the water put cell phone in a ziplock bag because it could save your life. I consider it a safety device. 8)

No ones life is worth not getting the extra jackets to me, period. Get the jackets or only take 7 out at a time. Just an opinion.

I agree.. I just didn't know. I actually have 8 jackets after counting, so Ill be buying another one. I just didn't know if those counted as a PFD. Now I know :)

Yes they count as one. A type IV. You are required to have a type I, II or III for every person. You also need a type IV on a 16' or bigger boat. And, it has to be accessible. Not in a locker. It makes a nice seat cushion though.

Also, a life jacket is worthless unless you wear it. Even on my 12 footer with only 4 hp we always wear one when underway, unless we are in a no wake zone, as in trailering, and need to have more flexability for manuevering a tiller in heavy current.

I dont wear it unless Im skiing, tubing, or floating in a cove. Of course Im probably dumb for doing so, but i figure my swim lessons from the time i was 6 months old can come in handy at some point or another. Plus, it ruins the tan ;)

Also, the manually inflated type do not count as a lifejacket, unless they are being worn.
If they are lying on the seat, they are considered as litter.

Also, you will be ticketed if the life jackets are not properly fitted to each person on the boat. Children must have CHILD life jackets, and it will do you no good if you have a life jacket for a person that would require a 2XX and it`s only a Large. Very strict rules.

Nothing comes in as handy as a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) when you are drowning.

And there is no way that anyone is going to put one on after they hit the water. So if the PFD is onboard, it is useless if not being worn.

Re: Question about life jackets

It is all about the current conditions

With children wearing them 110% of the time

If you go to a cove and anchor for a swim are you going to wear a PFD ?

Or take the risk i dont see that many people swiming in a PFD which is when far more people die

If i am in a sailboat race were i am going to be allover the boat doing risky things it is a 100% PDF

If i am on my power boat on a perfect day putting around at 20 MPH with other qualifed adults i am going to take that risk

If i go out buy myself i am NOT going to take a risk

If the wind should pick up or other things happen that raise the risk its going right on

Hahaha

Well, I wont be having any kids on board, just my buddies (Im a senior in college). And when I go swimming, I wear my life jacket as a chair... I dont like having to tread water if I dont have to lol.

I never take the boat out alone, nor am I sailing or going out on bad weather condition days.

What do you hook your kill switch lanyard to if you don't wear a life vest?
