There is no standard for transom thickness, it can any thickness that will hold up for the particular application. Some are less than that

The bass buggy, isn't a little toon with an OB pod on the back? Man post a pic of the whole set up, I'm curious what your boat looks like and what size motor do you have for it?

I think either Titebond or Gorilla Glue will work. Titebond is as waterproof (or more) as the glue used in exterior plywood. Gorilla Glue us urethane-based, I believe, and it is also waterproof. Gorilla Glue needs some moisture to cure; I don't believe Titebond III does. I found Titebond to be much easier to work with than Gorilla Glue.

I have to concur with JASinil2006 on his assessment of the glues. Both Titebond III and Gorilla glues will work perfectly. However, Titebond III is way easier to apply and work with then Gorilla glue. But whatever you decide to go with, either of them will work. Most go with Titebond III. But it has to be Titebond III and not Titebond standard wood glue too.

Hi..it is 20 feet long...currently has original matching mariner 45 HP four cylinder.. no speed demon I'm sure...havent had it in water yet...but sounds good on muffs...gonna be a fishing/family boat so speed is not that important...can take up to an 80 HP though...no good pics now cuz I had to clean up phone but I'll take some soon!

So I used gorilla glue last night...so far so good..but now I'm wondering...can I use this (or the titebond 3 which is probably easier to spread) to seal up the outside and edges?

Do your test fit, drill mounting holes and when all is well seal the new transom with spar urethane gloss, you can get it at Home Depot. Since your transom is small 1qt would more be more than enough for 3 coats on the flat which would be like 6 on the edges.

I'd use something that penetrates and/or encapsulates the wood better. Woodonglass advocates the use of some stuff he calls Old Timers' Formula... this would probably be a good candidate for sealing the wood.

Good stuff for sure but... You see the size of the transom? Not sure they sell all the ingredients in the amount he would need.

So if you stated that you boat is 20 feet long and the transom looks a couple of feet wide, That has to be one long skinny hull. Now I have to see it. Pictures! ASAP.

Phone is not cooperating...but you're making me nervous lol...I'll try to get more pics...if you Google 1987 bass buggy that is what it is...also hard to get pics in barn cuz it takes up so much room!

Yeah it's a toon with a OB pod so the transom wood is smaller than a regular boat, don't get nervous lots of them are like that. ;)

Other than the marine varnish (not sure of its cost), I figured the other stuff is cheap enough to pick up a can, even if it's more than is needed. Then, the recipe can just be scaled down to accommodate the need.

(Also, I confess, I tend to have stuff like that sitting around from other projects. Doesn't everyone keep a can of Linseed oil at home? :D)

After see this is from a pontoon boat, it all makes better sense now...at least to me. I couldn't figure out how a 20 foot boat with such a narrow transom would look like.

Gorilla Glue, during a test I performed on both glues, failed horribly that is why I recommended Tite. After sitting in a container with water for 24 hours, the gorilla glue allowed 2 pieces of ply to come apart with a putty knife. The Tite took a 24" pry bar to seperate and it tore in pieces.

Just my 0.02.

Test fit...and spar varnish drying!! Went with the spar because it was at Lowes...either way will be better and much safer than what I had...thanks to everyone who chimed in, your input is greatly appreciated!!! My only concern now is getting this spar to DRY already!!!

Good tip! Make sure all lines up before WAITING for the stain to dry...takes forever! That would not be good if something didn't work and you had to start over after sealing!
