Question about Navonics Iphone GPS app

I have the Navonics app for my iphone and have a question for the users of this app.

If I have a waypoint or mark that I want to go to, I can?t figure out a way for the GPS to direct me towards the mark. Most GPS units will have a right / left arrow to keep you on track and even an estimated time of arrival, etc. I figured out how to set a route, but this does not (as best I can tell) actually direct me towards the mark.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Re: Question about Navonics Iphone GPS app

If you create a route from where you are to where you are going and then click the location arrow in the bottom left it will tell you the direction of travel with a small arrow showing your track and distance to final waypoint but not time to get there. If your create a route between two waypoints it will tell you the distance between and the compass heading you would need to follow to go between point one and point two. These functions are very limited in my opinion and are much harder to use since the last update to the app.

It sounds like you are just missing the part about tapping the location arrow on the bottom left.

You're not missing anything. As far as I can tell, it doesn't direct you like a true GPS would, it merely tracks you location. You can save your tracks for later use, but you can't ask it to plot the path for you.

Thanks a lot!! I wondered why the arrow button sometimes changed it's look. On a seperate note, why in the HECK doesn't Navonics offer ANY instructions on this app? Even their web site is so lame with it's lack of user guides to it's products. Just offers a FAQ. Weird!!

Thanks again!

One more question. I created a route with 8 waypoints. I like the total distance info it offers. How do I hide or recall the route as needed so it's not always visible?

Thanks!

After trying to answer your questions I think I have decided this app sucks :(

Re: Question about Navonics Iphone GPS app

It's $10 in the app store. I tend to agree with spdracr - the app does have it's down falls. I think I would say it does a great job of telling you where you ARE - shows depth (from charts), bouys, things in the water, etc. but sucks when it comes to providing guidance to a location. I guess you get what you pay for. I know there is anohter competing app (don't recall the name) I wonder if it's better for directional guidance.

In all fairness, you can get any map for any state once you pay your 10$. Those map chips to be used in real GPS's will set you back 149$ per region or 99$ per state. I use it on my Iphone for Ice fishing and find it is quite accurate on the lakes I fish. I just walk or drive around till I get where I need to be. I purchased the chips to use on my gps/graphs. I think if they gave you that kind of performance and coverage for 10$ they may have trouble staying in buisness.

Re: Question about Navonics Iphone GPS app

All the reasons mentioned above are why I have been telling everyone that starts a thread on the Navionics smart phone apps that they are OK for an emergency back up, but that's about it. So many people are looking to save a $ (which I understand), but they are putting themselves at risk by thinking that their iPad or iPhone is a fully functional GPS.
