What can make the pee stop and start , At idle speed the thing will pee for several seconds and then stop for several seconds then start back etc, The almost new impeller has worked fine for about 5 hours but now I notice this, Any ideas ? It is a 1960 merc 300..thanks

Maybe the thermostat opening and closing?

No Thermostat on that engine, as far as I know, Mercury didn't start using a thermostat till around the mid 80's.

Re: question about pee

With air pressure, blow back up the pee tube to clear debris. If this only happens at an idle, this is not a real problem. Is the engine block, at the top of the engine, getting hot?

Re: question about pee

When I had it out 2 weeks ago it never would run wide open. When I returned to dock it seemed to be rather hot, I checked it at home and no pee so I pulled the foot and cleaned off the pump and blew every thing out with air and put it back together. Cranked it again and then noticed the off and on pee. I guess another shake down ride will tell me if it is fixed , I for sure dont want it to overheat so I will have to watch it. thanks

Re: question about pee

Could be worn pump liner/cover plate; impeller key not in proper location; pieces of old impeller blocking water tube/passages; impeller vanes not installed in clockwise direction; grease used to install impeller (makes the vanes lose suction).

I think I now know what has happened. The entire pump assembly had a thick coat of emulsified gear oil on it. My next step will be to drain the foot oil and replace with new oil. I dont want to try and find new seals this close to the end of the season when I only want to take it out 2 or 3 more times but if it stops cooling I wont have a choice.

Re: question about pee

rivermouse, If you have gear lube coming up into the water pump assy, you have a real problem. When you drain your gear lube, check to make sure that there is no water in your lower unit. If so, the seals at the bottom of the water pump housing need to be replaced and check the drive shaft area where these seal ride. If the shaft is grooved, they make sleeves that should repair this area. Their hard to install but cheaper than a new drive shaft.

merc850 is right about old pieces of water pump impeller being sent up thru your engines cooling system, check this out.

Re: question about pee

I may have overfilled the foot with oil which could be part of the problem but I see that it is time to replace the seals below the pump. thanks for the help, My hope is I can take it out for a couple of short rides first and deal with the thing this winter .

Re: question about pee

You can't overfill the lower unit
A couple more SHORT rides without investigating pump could be your last ride.
When you changed the impellar, were there any missing vanes?
Never blow air up into the head. any crap will end up there.

Re: question about pee

Update ,,I took the foot to the little shop I have been to before and had new crank shaft seals and a new water pump cartridge installed, The old one broke apart trying to get it out and lucky for me the guy had another one, Total cost was 100 bucks. I have not put it back on the engine but will post the final results,,,It took a special tool to remove the cartridge. This was a project I could not do without some help.
