Why do you see lots of boats that have square box like bases instead of pedestals for the 2 forward seats. I was thinking maybe the floors weren't solid enough for a pedestal. Is that usually it? thanks

Box seats can be cheaper to manufacture

Re: Question about seats

I think it is the seating capacity initially, if pontoon was marketed for cruising; allowing the maximum number of passengers. The ones marketed for fishing generally have pedestals there. I do suspect, that if you, or I for that matter, decide to put in those pedestal seats, additional bracing would be called for. Possibly someone on this forum who has that setup can advise what was used to support the reduced weight distribution of a base. I know you would want to catch at least two deck supports to keep them from rocking. I think additionally, the bench type seating is to bring passengers to front, to help balance load. Don't really know about riding up front on pedestals while under way.

Re: Question about seats

Most boats with box-type seating that I've seen were to allow for additional storage areas. There is lots of space for storage under seats, so the manufactures utilize those areas. Good idea in my book...

Re: Question about seats

i've actuallly been thinking about replacing my pedestal with boxes so I can have storage.

On mine, as far as attachment, it is thru bolted the 3/4 ply flooring that is wrapped in fiberglass- there is underside access.

And remember, with additional storage space you have to fill it up with items you simply can't do without...

Re: Question about seats

Those box-type seats generally allow seats to extend out to lounges too.
