OK fella's I need some assistance here. I need to replace the steering cable and I'm confussed on the length. All the sites I have checked said you measure from the center of the steering wheel to the gunnel. Then from the dash to the transom. Then the gunnel to the center of the motor and add 6". When I do this I get 13.08 ft. It also says to round to the next foot. So that makes 14 ft. I was finally able to find the part number on the old cable and it says SSC 12415. So the old cable is a 15' cable but my measurements say I need a 14' cable. Has anybody ran into this situation? Should I go with what was in there or would it be ok to go with the 14 footer?

go with what you have in the boat already.... Alot of websites confuse steering cables with throttle/shift cables.

Yup, that is how you do it, if you measured right and you got 14' go with that.

If you go too long you have to kink the cable which makes it wear faster and makes the steering harder.

Re: Question about steering cable length

Does anybody have an old 14' cable that could measure the black insulation and let me know how long it is. I'd like to take that measurment and cut an old piece of coax and run it just as I would the steering cable and see how it fits.
