question about steering cable

I am putting my steering cable back on and wanted to know if there is a measurement for setting it. It is on a old v-8 setup with power steering. When I think I have it set right and turn full right the power steering rod fully extends and stops leaving a little room form shift lever to transom. When I turn to the left the shift lever or arm hits the transom and it seems like there is more stroke in the power steering rod. Should there be some kind of stop or will it stop when it hits transom?

not a measurement pre se, but you should adjust the tube for equal swing of the drive.

should I turn steering wheel so it is centered with equal turns both way then put steering arm facing straight ahead and then make up cable. should arm hit transom when fully turned both ways. I was thinking there would be a stop so it did not hit the transom.

Mine has a 3 inch long aluminum nut where the hex is in the picture and the hex nut is on the other side. I can get a pic.

OK,thats similiar to one I worked on. what you need to do is loosen the 3 inch tube, loosen the nut on the other side and shift the steering system to the side thats needed. Then tighten up both sides. The so called 3 inch section has 2 flats on the tube, correct?
