Question about Testing the New Motor

Okay, for those of you that don't know or don't remember...<br /><br />OMC (GM) L6 250cid 165hp...<br /><br />My new long block came with these instructions to follow after I'm done with all of the installation (I've filled the oil pump and oil filter prior to installation and now, with the oil pan on, I've filled it with oil):<br /><br /> Do not install spark plugs. Crank the motor for 2 minutes after attaining oil pressure.<br /><br />I have dual batteries on my boat, but in the past, when I've had car troubles, I do not recall any battery having enough juice to crank it for 2 minutes without the motor starting. Will this not kill my batteries???

If 2 minutes of cranking without sparkplugs kills your batteries, then you need new batteries.<br />Even a single 24 should crank for 2 minutes without plugs and still be able to start the engine when you put the plugs back in.<br />All they are trying to do is to prime the oil system without the engine running.

Don't crank longer than 15 seconds with a 1 minute cool down or you may fry your starter.

Great advice... <br /><br />Thanks! I would have been so excited about the testing, I would have forgotten about burning up my starter!!!

The starter isn't going to get hot very fast, there is no compression to load it. But, I also think the 2 minutes is a little excessive. Once you have oil pressure, it only takes a few more revolutions to have every bearing primed with oil enough to start the engine.<br />If you want run it a minute and feel it. Shouldn't be more than warm. Then run it the second time after the starter cools.

Good point about the no compression. I hadn't thought of that.<br /><br />I hooked a manual oil pressure guage up temporarily when priming my engine.
