Question about water flow

I'm sure this will fall under the category of stupid question... I have a '85 85HP Force. I am concerned that not enough water is flowing through. There is a dual exhaust port on the upper portion of the lower unit, and a larger single exhaust port on the bottom just above the prop.. When I have it hooked up to the garden hose, there is a lot of water shooting out from the lower exhaust, and a weak/small flow from the upper dual port.

Today on the water, I noticed that at a lower speed there was a pretty fair amount of water coming from the upper ports (not a lot of force though). As higher speed there was little to none flowing from these ports. I am positive that there is a high flow from the lower, but wasn't sure if this was nromal behavior.

I did put a new impeller on last season, and it's only been in the water a handful of times (less than 12) so I wouldn't think the impeller is worn.

Any thoughts?

Re: Question about water flow

This sounds correct. The main port is just above the prop. While at idle, there is not enough exhaust pressure to blow the water out of the bottom port, so some comes out of the top ports. As you increase RPM's the water flow is forced out of the bottom port so not much comes out of the top ports.

Many folks, myself included, have installed a tell-tale so that we can better see that water is flowing through the engine. Directions on how to install one can be found at the top of this forum. It takes about 10 mins to install.

Thanks for the info! At the lake today I saw a tell tale for the first time on an Evinrude. That is a great idea. So with a tell tale set up like what is mentioned in the sticky, would it have a constant stream of water regardless of RPM?
Thanks again!

^Yes. If you follow the sticky, you'll have a constant stream of water. Be
sure and drill for you exit line in a position that you can see from the helm.
You'll be much happier if you can just turn to see the water flow, which is the
idea in the first place...lol. Good luck.

Re: Question about water flow

On my tell-tale, I inserted a piece of copper tubing inside the rubber tubing where it exits the cowling. That way, I can bend the tubing to direct the water stream wherever I want it to.

Thanks
