Question about which type of steering/controls to buy..

Hello,

I've been thinking about adding an aluminum console with controls/steering to my 16ft Smokercraft - Big Fish Model

I included a link so you can get an idea of current boat layout:

http://www.smokercraft.com/Showroom/...6 Big Fish

I finally found an aluminum consoloe and control mount on the internet that I would like to use:

http://www.amazon.com/T-H-Marine-STE.../dp/B000KKD304

I would mount this console on the starboard side in front of the square storage box. I would use the storage box as a seat.

My question is; what do I need for steering and controls? I want to go with a very basic setup. I have a 30 HP 1998 Evinrude (2-stroke) which is mounted on an aluminum CMC trim mount (therefore the engine sits off (in back) of the transome a bit).

There seems to be many options, so I thought it would be best to ask those who know!

Thanks......

Re: Question about which type of steering/controls to buy..

Welcome to iboats!

This steering system will work http://www.iboats.com/Uflex-Rotec-R...02052992--**********.322584944--view_id.49379 but you have to measure carefully for the proper cable. Very clean and simple installation.

Take a look at the amazon console....... print the picture and see if there are any sheet metal places close to you that will manufacture one from aluminum at a cheaper price. I think that is the right one (which will have to be modified for your boat) but I bet you can get one cheaper with more of a custom fit in your local area.

I use the Uflex system and I like the results.

Proper measurements are the key. Install your console BEFORE you order the steering control to make sure you have the right length cable. You will also have to buy a few more odd and end parts (steering wheel and linkage hook ups for motor on ebay which I have found best). Do you have motor shift throttle controls? Once again ebay.

I will not lie to you....... it is not an easy road but a very satisfying one you are going down.

Happy Holidays!

Before you get going on this I would price everthing out, don't know what you need to change from tiller to wheel steering but it could get pricey, just checked the iboats store and a basic rack and pinion steering set up is $160, steering wheels average $35

If you aren't on a super tight budget I would reccomend a Teleflex NFB, it si way better than the rack system

I agree with Bob too, you may be able to find a local welder that can get you a console that better fits your boat for cheaper or the same price.

You have to think of weight also, you will be putting @ 120lbs + yourself fairly far forward and to starboard so you will want to balance that on the port side with a battery or gas tank so you don't run funny.

There is alot to think about here but it should be a really nice project, just take your time and think it through.

Re: Question about which type of steering/controls to buy..

Thanks, I appreciate the input. Now that the holidays have past I'm a little more focused on this project. I've been thinking about the controls. Should I go with a dual lever system (like the Evinrude Simplex) or an all-in-one style.

I find no great inconvience in moving my hand 2 inches to the throttle with the the dual lever option!. What are the advantages/disadvantages with both? Is the Simplex (dual) style more simple to install and adjust the the all-in-one?

Thanks..
