I got my new petronic Ing and it looks like i can either go with strait 12v to the coil or go through the resistor when i first got this boat it had been converted to electronic (don't remember what brand) anyway the coil would over heat and burn up after 2 12v coils and a ton of other fixes that did"nt work i got rid of the resistor wire and bought a ceramic style resistor and converted back to points. Anyway its time for a new resistor so i thought i'd try to go back to electronic I bought a petronix kit off ebay with the coil and wires and it looks like i can go strait to the coil with 12v I just want to be sure the boat is a 86 gradywhite tournament bowrider with the famous 470 delco distribter thanks in advance

Easy: Remove the ceramic resistor, and run the wire directly to the coil +, that will give you a full 12V to the coil. Put the red wire from the Petronix to that same coil + terminal, and you should be good to go. Did you get the Ignitor II (91146A) and Flamethrower II coil? The only precaution is that the 12V wire to the coil should be stranded (not solid) wire. If you got the Flamethrower 1.5 ohm coil I believe you still need the resistor. You might want to check with Petronix. http://www.pertronix.com/support/default.aspx

You need 12V to the pertronix unit with no resistor. The coil you have is what is dependent on the ballast resistor. Wire the coil as required. I went with the ignitor 2 and the flame thrower coil, which required no resistor at all.

+ 1 on that. Bought my Pertronix from Retro-Rockets and Carl Dudash. He was emphatic that the Pertronix needs the full 12 volts and cannot be counted on with the resistor in the circuit. The Ignitor 2 protects against burnout if the key is left on - a feature not present in the Ignitor 1. The Flamethrower coil works on the full 12 volts - no resistor.

Oh, and my 470 runs noticeably smoother with this setup than with the points - particularly at lower RPM's.

thanks for the replys I did get the ignitor 2 with the flame thrower coil and it did say to check the ohm reading it said if the coil was 3 ohms to not use the resistor and thats what i did I'm just paranoid because of all the trouble i had with other electronic set up that was in the boat when i got it and your right it dose run smoother and start eaiser I just figured I would ask the experts on this forum before i trusted it on a long run
