Question abt 1968 Mercury 650

Hi,

New to forum, and new to outboards in general. Did work on my old BMW 2002 so I am not a total moron but am feeling like one now in trying to get this outboard I got running.

I got a 1968 Mercury 650. We hooked the battery up and the starter spins but never actually rose up and engaged the flywheel. Now that I have finally gotten the starter off the motor and looked at, it looks like the "screw" in the bendix throws the starter gear clockwise, but when the starter is hooked up to the boat, it spins counterclockwise with no effect. The gear does rise when you turn it by hand clockwise and rises up towards the flywheel. Does not really even turn at all counterclockwise until the power is put to it but makes no effort to go up and grab the flywheel. It is almost as if the screw gear in the bendix is in a "backwards" screw and that I should need one that turns the gear the other direction, but maybe that is just the way it operates. Truth is, I have no idea how a boat starter should operate. It seems if it screw gear went to the opposite way, it'd fly up and grab the flywheel.

Any advice would be great.

I am by no way a expert on these but my first thought would be to trace out your wires make sure no one has got them mixed up.... fast way to tell is use a set of jumpers and hock the - to the starter case and the + to the power wire on the starter if then it spins how it should you got wires mixed up somewhere... if it still spins the same I'm guessing bad starter

Sooo. You've messed with BMW's eh? Then you should know the value of a good manual? Get yourself the Factoy manual for the specific motor you have. It will save you a ton of grief... and money too!
