Engine 1970 85hp Johnson.

I went to fleet farm to pick up some stuff and happened down the isle with different types of Lube. There I found:

"Citgo Supergard lower unit premium gear lube"

"Recommended for:
All outboards
All Stern Drives
Type C applications"

On the back it said:

"For use in all outboard and stern drive gear units specifying SAE 90, 80W-90, or 85W-90 including OMC Type "C". Includes MerCruse, OMC Cobra, Volvo stern drives and Merrcury, Evinrude, Mariner, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Force outboards. Certain older electric shift gearcase units require Dexron-II(or III) fluid."

I know that my OMC specifies Type "C" for my lower unit, but I'm suspicious of this combo gear lube.
Does anybody here have any experience with this gear lube?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I am suspicious too.
My understanding is the OMC Type C is unique to the HydroElectric shift / electric shift units.
I don't see how a product offered for other types of gearcases would also work here.
I am sure Joe Reeves or OBJ can confirm this or correct me though.
You can still get OMC /Type C premium, why not just go with that?

Craig

I did put OMC type C in lower unit (at 28$/gal),
but Citgo is a recognizable brand name and a whole lot cheaper.

Thanks,
Mike

These lube's are mean't for general application's. Such as, these gear cases are meant to be used for alround use. If you use a heavy lube in cold water, shifting can be sluggish. If you use a heavy lube in most conditions, you will have no problem if you are in the warmer climates. I use the The newer lube's in a hydro-electric gear case with no problems here in Iowa, 125 hydro-electric, 24 in. Raker, 6000 RPM, 15'5 Check-Mate, 3 year's use.
